Focus time is a calendar design problem

Ideas for protecting uninterrupted work through team agreements, with a clear distinction between ordinary calendar events and planned automation.

·Updated ·mmddyy

Longer stretches of uninterrupted work rarely survive by accident. They compete with meetings, deadlines, and requests that arrive throughout the day.

A calendar can make those plans visible, but visibility alone is not protection. An event called “Writing time” in mmddyy v1 is an ordinary event. The app does not automatically reserve focus time, prevent conflicts, or move meetings to protect it.

Start with an agreement

Discuss how much uninterrupted time different kinds of work need. A support rotation and a long writing task may need very different calendars. Agree on when a meeting can interrupt a planned work block and how the change should be communicated.

A useful agreement is specific enough to guide a decision:

  • Keep certain stretches free of routine meetings.
  • Put related conversations near one another where practical.
  • Leave transition time around calls.
  • Reconsider attendance before making a meeting larger.

These are human practices, not settings mmddyy currently enforces.

Record the plan without oversharing

You can create an ordinary timed event for work you want to plan. Daily and weekly repeats are available, but editing a repeating event changes the whole series, including past occurrences.

Anyone with viewer or editor access can read event details on that calendar. Use a separate, unshared personal calendar for sensitive plans. There is no free/busy-only focus mode in v1.

What automation might add

A future scheduler could compare the interruption cost of different meeting times and help preserve longer blocks. It would need to respect people’s choices and explain what it proposes to change.

Automatic focus protection is in our planned roadmap, with no announced release date. That is a direction to explore, not a promise that the app already protects your week.

Use mmddyy today for personal and team calendars, agreed events, and calendar sharing. Keep the team agreement alongside the software until automation can actually support it.

Time works better together.

Create personal and team calendars, organize events, and share calendar access with the people you choose.
